Steel Wool aims to liberate Black Woman as liberation pertains to Black hair. It started with reflection on Black hairstyles, on how I feel they often mimic white hair. How had Black hair been worn over time in America? How it was fashioned in Africa, in different tribes? I dove deep at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, but struggled to synthesize everything. So, I started small ~ interviewing individual Black Women about their relationships with their own hair. Morgan, my first interviewee, was so gracious and vulnerable. I saw how a single cell mirrors the larger organism.
