I wanted to incorporate the feeling of loss in the film, whether it be the loss of a fantasy about a particular place, the loss of a friend, or the loss of a country. This film also holds my experience of approaching America and New York as a complete foreigner - of things that alienated and welcomed me. As a person who believes that comedy is a way to deal with trauma, I wanted to create a darkly humorous film about New York.
