About this submission

I chose to tell this story because it highlights the resilience and unique way of life of a 12-year-old boy growing up on an isolated island in Lake Burera. His journey reflects the beauty and challenges of island life, showcasing his deep connection with nature, survival instincts, and dreams for the future. Through this film, I aim to shed light on the untold stories of children living in remote areas, emphasizing their strength, struggles, and the rich culture of Rwanda’s island communities.

My name is Didie Niyomukiza, and I’m a filmmaker whose journey began not in a film school, but with a passion and a purpose. I’ve always believed that powerful stories don’t just entertain they move, heal, and inspire. That belief led me to the camera, where I found my true language: visual storytelling. My path into cinematography and videography has been a hands-on journey of learning, growing, and creating. From the first time I held a camera, I knew this was more than just a tool it was a way to capture emotion, memory, and moments that would otherwise fade. I taught myself to see the world differently: through light, shadow, rhythm, and silence. I’ve since worked on everything from music videos and short films to documentaries and promotional pieces. One of my proudest roles is serving as director, producer, writer, and cinematographer of The Child of the Island, a project born from my heart, rooted in real life, and brought to screen with love. My approach is always intentional I don’t just aim for perfect shots; I aim for honest ones. Whether filming a simple human story or a complex creative vision, I bring emotion, precision, and a deep respect for every frame. This is more than a career for me. It’s a mission to give voice to those unheard, to show beauty in the ordinary, and to connect people across distances through the power of visual media more...
