On her London lay-over Patricia receives an unexpected invite to attend Boxing Day dinner@1 ¼ Camden Passage from her childhood friend. It simply beats staying in another airport hotel. Patricia's daughter Miriam is ecstatic that she is attending this dinner and pulls a few stunts to show-up her mother because truth be told Patricia is hardly ever around, she is a hot shot Human Rights lawyer who is constantly outing fires on the world stage - fighting all manner of social, environmental and sustainable matters.

Carbon

Let's talk minus carbon, alternative energy, green economic recovery, alongside racism, inclusion, intersectional gender related issues, Brexit and Covid-19, after watching my short Carbon .SynopsisSelf identified, non-binary, black narrowboater Tilly discusses her dilemma of seeking out an alternative eco-friendly lifestyle on the Regent's Canal. Where she finds it difficult to avoid polluting the air when most boats are powered by coal, diesel and gas. It's a conversation piece about communities fast tracked to green and sustainable lifestyles post COVID-19CO₂Toxic compounds, and greenhouse gases are warming up our planet at a rapid rate, with a maximum forecast range of 1.5°C and 1.7°C from 2030 to 2052, if net carbon isn’t drastically reduced. Scientists cite man-made events during the industrial revolution as the rise, ranging from 0.8°C to 1.2°C. Additionally, following their observation during the period between 2006 and 2015, they found a global mean rise of 0.87°C (UN). With concentration approximately 45% of Carbon Dioxide, from 280 ppm in 1750 to a staggering 415ppm in 2019 (Scripps Inst), along with other pollutants such as nitrate and methane, essentially our atmosphere is severely toxic. The air circulating can cause a range of diseases, not least respiratory conditions from viruses such as COVID-19.

Concrete South

Concrete South

Concrete South reflects the changing community of the south bank of the Thames River, that runs half a mile (800 m) south-east of Charing Cross and bounded by Westminster Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge. In the short montage, we see couples, tourists, strollers and passer-bys next to the recently renovated Southbank Centre, in view is the British Film Institute, National Theatre, restaurants, skate park and an architecturally brutalist bridge that shadows the many retrospectives and new releases that play at the BFI. After a long battle between the community and developers the skate park remains and is currently used by local young people. I question whether the area is loosing its ethnic and class mix? This short piece, which falls part of a bigger project titled Regent's & Vicky, can be used to start a conversation to either dispute or agree with such ideas.

Engrossed

Shaz is sat on the bus going to work and while reading the morning news there is a loud ping. She is slightly surprised because it's the first time she is hearing this new ping alert. She forgot she fiddled with the sounds the night before. She sees it's a text immediately as it drops as a banner. Totally engrossed into her world with her android, clicks into the notification to read the entire text. It's one single line that says "dont look back" from an unknown number. Completely perturbed she looks up from the phone and stares ahead at other passengers, waiting for an indicator of who the sender might be, but if they knew something, they were giving nothing away . Too scared to look back she looks to the side, and searched faces outside as her journey pass by other people, businesses , vans and cars in adjacent lanes.

Imitation of Life

Imitation of Life

Creator: Dionne Walker
This context sets out my reasons for wishing to change the ending- Imitation of Life (1959) was released in the past analogue world when we would watch movies of such stature first in the theatre, then again and again live and direct on the TV box at home. The end of Imitation Of Life where we see Sarah Jane (Susan Kohner) asking her dead mother for forgiveness needs a facelift . Though Sirk's version is progressive as it shines a light on gender, race and class we are short changed in the 21c and have to convert those old bank notes into bitcoins that resonates with many and all. While Annie's (Juanita Moore) passing was perhaps inevitable because of her age in the story, an ending which shows Sarah Jane with agency will be more instructive and satisfying. For a modern take I would review both Sarah Jane & Annie character arcs. In terms of casting it would be politically prudent to cast a mixed race or light skin Sarah Jane of African heritage. For the purpose of this challenge where I'm rewriting the final scene and we follow Sarah Jane, her character should take charge towards the end, where we see her either seek forgiveness just before her mother dies OR we see her help out with the funeral arrangements- see attached for final scene.
