will you be my father? marks the start of Ayla’s self-introspective quest for some sort of father figure. It begins for her, the same way it began for me: when I was asked by my Hazaan prior to my bat mitzvah, what my father’s Hebrew name was, and instead had to tell him Abraham (one of the Patriarchs aka “Jewish fathers”) as my mom did not know the real answer.
