I've always loved watching "chick flicks" or "girlie movies," but found myself embarrassed to admit it when I went to film school and began studying classic film. I was ecstatic to discover classic romantic comedies like "The Philadelphia Story" or "Roman Holiday," but I noticed queer people of color were never centered in these stories. With "It Had to Be You," I aimed to take part in the current rom-com renaissance by centering a plus sized Black queer girl and showing that girls like me are just as worthy of zany love stories as Katharine Hepburn.
