About this submission
Being raised in Hawai'i, I've come to realize that most people come for the backdrop. The perfect photos of lush beaches and tropical vibes, all catering to their perfect honeymoon and vacation needs. All I see is the ugly truth; Hawai'i is a paradise stolen, a people displaced, and a culture long forgotten. The work to unravel the paradise myth that surrounds my community, home and culture will take years and years of unraveling these lies, yet I am more encouraged than ever to tell these stories and put in the work. This script "Exit Fee" came to me when I read a news article that stated Hawai'i was one of the last states to make it illegal for cops to engage in sexual conduct with prostitutes and there were no laws in place (till recently) that kept them accountable. I like to focus most especially on the modern Hawaiian's struggles and come at it from a very humanistic standpoint, allowing discussion pertaining to the taboos society places around topics such as sexual abuse and prostitution. This is a short film script that I submitted into the Sundance Native Labs and would love any feedback.
