Sonata is a film about escaping a toxic relationship and translating the confusing elements of abuse-prone love into art. It’s a deeply personal reflection of a relationship I experienced — and therefore it’s almost a message to myself; a reminder that loving something doesn’t always mean it’s right for you. Sonata is a film about that kind of toxic ignorant young love, about being with an older person, someone who snuffs out your flame, and is a story nestled in the normalization of a gay relationship, which I think is equally as important.
