As an emerging Kenyan-American filmmaker I am obsessed with sharing thoughtful narratives on what it means to truly embrace African heritage and culture in all her complexities, flaws and treasures. I want to tell stories that showcase the multitude of ways Black/African bodies have resisted systematic oppression and have created their own joy and power. I want Kenyans to see themselves in a light that is beautiful and radiant. I want young Kenyan girls and boys to see Beryl’s power and be inspired. I want them to learn from her and model the ways she derives her own self-worth.
