About this submission

"There Wasn't Anything I Liked" was inspired by my childhood and growing up in poverty. I lived in a semi-segregated area of Western Massachusetts attending a mostly white elementary school. As one of the few impoverished and only black girls in the school, I felt like an outsider as I was excluded from activities because my parents didn’t make the income to pay for things like books at a book fair. I had to lie or “forget” money/permission slips not to make it known I didn’t have any money. This is a story to make audiences who felt invisible as a kid, feel heard.
