I came across Susan’s story by chance. I was struck by her talent and simultaneously the lack of recognition she has received until very recently. As I got to know her I was captivated by her life, mainly her strength to endure the hardships of being a homeless mother out on the streets. I eventually noticed that, as our relationship strengthened, Susan’s story began to change. It became more nuanced. There were aspects to what she went through that seemed unresolved and it became clear that the film could be a process by which those traumas could be confronted.
