I was born as Gao Shenghan 高胜寒, I became Rena, and then I became... ?
This short film was inspired from my own decolonizing journey, starting from accidentally hearing someone in Berlin call me "Shenghan" and feeling instantly so recognized and seen. I was inspired by Cathy Park Hong's Minor Feelings, excerpts from which I also used in the film. I began to make the film as a process of amending my relationship with my Chinese name, English name, my Chinese name written in letters instead of characters, hoping it resonates with others who also have more than one name:)
