This three-hour, live, online master class with a top game designer explored games that tell stories to show how game mechanics are storytelling tools and how interactivity can be used to create narrative experiences in almost any medium. You will be led through an analysis of the storytelling techniques of several popular games, and participate in an exercise that reveals how game mechanics can be used to create aesthetics and stories.

Master Classes are in-depth, interactive learning experiences focused on craft and career building and led by renowned industry experts. Topics include fiction and documentary filmmaking, TV writing and production, and navigating and succeeding in the entertainment industry.

- Where story innovation is happening in games

- How player choice can be narrative

- How to create, and more importantly test, narrative play

- The theory underlying effective narrative game design

Nick Fortugno is an entrepreneur, interactive narrative designer and game designer based in New York City. He is a founder and principal of Playmatics, an interactive development company. Playmatics has created a variety of digital and real-world experiences for organizations including ProPublica, Red Bull, AMC (such as the CableFAX award winning BREAKING BAD: THE INTERROGATION), Disney, American Museum of Natural History, the Corporation of Public Broadcasting, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and the Red Cross/Red Crescent. For the past ten years, Fortugno has been a designer, writer and project manager on dozens of commercial and serious games, and served as lead designer on the downloadable blockbuster DINER DASH and the award-winning serious game AYITI: THE COST OF LIFE.
