I’ve spent my time as a filmmaker looking for ways to articulate who my Waipo is through images. Yet she defies definition; I can only describe her. If I try to film her, she will decline, claiming that she “can’t speak,” because she lacks formal education.
In movies, we see “life-or-death” action and teenage “coming of age." But seldom do we seriously consider the experience of coming of old age, and the end of life. I made this film as my own Waipo nears the end of her life. I made it for her and anyone who loves their grandmother.
