Living in the D.C. area, it's impossible to miss the influence of "Go-Go" music throughout the city. Born in the city's darkest era, Go-Go's message of love and unity has endured thanks to tenacious and passionate individuals. Elijah Jamal Balbed, the film's protagonist, embodies that spirit. His fusion of jazz and Go-Go honors the music's tradition while carving a new identity that speaks to the modern moment. I was immediately drawn to Elijah, his story, and his ability to speak to the effect of gentrification and changing social climates on Black culture and music specifically.
