About this submission

When my daughter was born with the unexpected diagnosis of Down syndrome, I carried a lot of guilt for my reaction. I was unaware of how the internalized ableism affected my ability to accept my daughter. I wrote for Paloma for moms like me who don't have a way to voice that guilt. I wrote For Paloma to show the world it was never about my daughter; she was always just as she should be; it was me who had to change and break down outdated ideas of what I thought having a disability meant.
