About this submission

As a queer person growing up in homogeneous Orange County I've always been drawn to historical stories about marginalized communities that complicate this place's story. When I learned about the Japanese community at Crystal Cove State Park, I was drawn to parallels with my own immigrant Jewish families' experiences during WW2. The story shares a history that not many people here know (only a small plaque memorializes the 1940s Japanese community) and shows a kind of darkness undergirding White suburbia. Last, we are facing issues around racial injustice, wrongful imprisonment, and blind patriotism in the present.
