I lived in an indigenous community in Guatemala for eight months where I was exposed to different cultural traditions. After gaining the trust of the community by living with a local family and teaching in nearby middle schools, I was invited by a participating friend to document the colorful Convite dance, an event I sought to understand through the community. Inspired to use the visual field as a means of representation, I based my praxis on collaborative relationships with the dancers, musicians, and community organizers featured in this production to provide a multilayered understanding of this tradition.
