As an artist, I love to contest stereotypes from within in order to subvert expectations. This film is a formulaic high school rom-com with an archetypal girl next door protagonist and her class crush. It even leans into the campiness of musical theatre with cheesy music and lyrics. Everything is perfect, almost too good to be true, before it takes an unexpected and chilling turn. This film explores the fears we carry when it comes to love, making the familiar unfamiliar and the sweet terrifying.
