Rebecca Walters
Rebecca is an East Coast-based social impact filmmaker and arts educator. Rebecca received her BFA in Filmmaking, with a concentration in Directing from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. She is currently a Kennedy Center Kenan Fellow with experience in film production, screenplay analysis, choreography, and integrating the arts into elementary school curriculums. Her work has premiered at the Austin Film Festival, Cucalorus Film Festival, and Ivy Film Festival. Rebecca’s recent film, échappé, sheds light on sexual harassment in the dance industry. As a dancer of nearly 15 years, she felt that it was important to depict the quiet battles that dancers face every day. The line that separates an appropriate and/or inappropriate adjustment by a choreographer is frequently blurred, making allegations of sexual harassment or misconduct difficult to identify and defend. In this regard, it was crucial to critique current standards, in order to advocate for a new set of protocols regarding touch and intimacy in local and professional dance companies. Rebecca's work tends to focus on the ethical and moral dilemmas faced by a female protagonist in professional and non-professional environments.
