John August
Screenwriter, Novelist, Software Developer
John August is a screenwriter, novelist, and software developer. His feature credits include Go, Big Fish, Frankenweenie, Corpse Bride, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and both Charlie’s Angels movies. His feature directing debut, The Nines, premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. For television, he has created series for The WB, Fox and ABC. He wrote the book for the Broadway musical version of Big Fish.
John's novel trilogy Arlo Finch debuted in February 2018 from Macmillan, with translations in 11 languages. His company, Quote-Unquote Apps, makes several apps of interest to screenwriters, most notably the screenwriting app Highland and Weekend Read for iPhone. He also created the “Writer Emergency Pack.”
John co-hosts the Scriptnotes podcast with Craig Mazin, and serves as a frequent advisor to the Sundance Screenwriters Lab. He maintains two websites aimed at budding screenwriters, johnaugust.com and screenwriting.io. You can find him on Twitter and Instagram @johnaugust.
