“Don’t Mess with My Kitchen” highlights the different ways young Ghanaian-American women navigate domestic spaces. Using the kitchen as a case study on belonging and self-ownership, it focuses on a particular household, the women in that household, and the complex relationships they have with the kitchen, and each other. By juxtaposing generational narratives of cooking with new styles of experimentation, the documentary makes room for questions: Who do first-generation Ghanaian-American women credit with teaching them how to cook? Where do they feel safest cooking? How do they approach the kitchen? What do they survive, and what do they leave behind?
