I’m fascinated by how different our intimate relationships with family or significant others look in public versus behind closed doors. Dog Lover was my way of exploring that, and using absurdist comedy to come to a macabre yet very human conclusion: sometimes we choose to make it work in love, in any of its twisted forms, rather than be alone. For Walter, that’s a good thing.
As a director, most of my films explore female desire, and the ways it is stifled by social taboos. Though Walter is the protagonist of Dog Lover, Sarah’s desires are his (and my) fixation.
