Paul Sanchez IV

Paul Sanchez IV is an innovative LatinX writer and director whose work embodies the ethos of "Radical Inclusion and Empathy without Fear." Growing up unhoused as a teen, Paul developed a deep connection to the lives of outsiders and the marginalized, shaping his authentic and gritty storytelling. His background, influenced by the punk rock movement and its spirit of defiance, gives his work a raw, unfiltered edge that resonates with audiences. Paul’s journey into filmmaking began in his youth, experimenting with Super 8 cameras and drawing inspiration from his uncle, an experimental filmmaker in New York City's vibrant punk scene. This early exposure to the DIY ethos and boundary-pushing art laid the foundation for his career. Despite facing homelessness during his undergrad at NYU, Paul pursued his passion, eventually earning a BFA from SUNY Purchase and an MFA from the prestigious American Film Institute. A monograph of Paul’s self-portraits, showcasing 30 years as a photobooth artist, was collected by the MoMa. As a touring keyboardist for Moby, Paul documented his travels across Europe, deepening his understanding of storytelling through music and film. His films, including the feature documentary MODULATIONS and short ONION UNDERWATER, have been showcased at international festivals, including Berlin, Sundance and Tribeca, earning him recognition for his unique voice in cinema and winning him the Peace Prize in the Singapore International Film Festival. In November 2024, Paul became a Sundance Episodic Lab fellow. Paul is an educator and has worked with PAR LOS NIÑOS and BEYOND SHELTER with the “housing first” ethos to get homeless families into permanent housing. Paul’s dedication to storytelling extends to mentoring young filmmakers and teaching at institutions like NYFA and AFI. His commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in the industry, along with his lived experiences, make him a powerful advocate for authentic, heartfelt narratives in modern television and cinema.
