Unshopping observes the sometimes-impressionable, sometimes-paranoid filmmaker trying to ditch a pair of thirteen-gallon trash bags that occupy her bedroom floor. They conceal an array of fast fashion. But rather than trendy clothes, these bags only function as pillars of shame, reflecting unsustainable choices and the trash heaps they’ll inevitably contribute to. Shedding that guilt and those clothes by any means possible (excluding a landfill), the filmmaker encounters obstacles, misdirection, propaganda, rabbit holes, and a one-sided obsession with H&M CEO Karl-Johan Persson. The film explores the notion of "consumer responsibility" for what it is: a corporate scheme to evade climate action.
