Shifting Perspective
Creator: Helen Iley
Leah lives in Oakland and as a kid once dreamed of becoming a journalist and crossing the bridge to San Francisco. She is close to her family and very much proud of her heritage and roots. However, after an incident in her late-teens Leah has developed severe agoraphobia and attempts to battle this daily as it effects both her career prospects, personal life as well the lives of her close relatives. In this moment of the story, her distant sister Aurelia tries to reconcile with Leah after not being there for her most recently. To try and appear in control Leah rejects any offer of help or pleas for forgiveness as she heads out to prove she is capable of facing it alone. However, the city setting soon becomes too chaotic and an unlikely stranger suddenly appears that helps her to view her life, this scary world, in a different perspective.
Super
Creator: Helen Iley
SUPER follows a young woman on antidepressants who begins to experience super powers. Taken from a personal perspective of therapy and considering medication, I wanted to discuss the stigma and taboo around antidepressants and also create an open and honest dialogue about someone choosing to continue on them. By placing this in the world of a girl obsessed with comics, I wanted to jar this imagery and world with her reality as she becomes a hero of her own narrative. I approach writing with a humanistic approach - addressing social stigmas and how everyday characters encounter extraordinary and emotional challenges.
The Elephant in My Room
Creator: Helen Iley
During this strange time in which our doubts and fears begin to creep back in, I have looked to objects around me that have helped me to remain optimistic. One has reminded me of a significant moment in my life where, despite it being overwhelming, I was reassured that it was ok to pause and "to lay quietly in the deep mind... and dream". This specifically being a wooden elephant which my brother gave to me when I graduated from University.
