“Background Dancer” presents a dark comedic twist on the music performer documentary (think “Twenty Feet from Stardom” or Jennifer Lopez’s “Halftime”). My purpose in telling this story is to upend conventional expectations of revered artists in the music industry by asking: who is deemed worthy of stardom, and why? By showing Camilla Sacks– a frenetic plus-sized dancer– through the eyes of those who worked with her, I wish to challenge audiences’ impulse to idolize real people, stripping them of their humanity, all while inflating their flaws.
