Steph Smith, filmmaker based in New Orleans, works as an independent director, producer, cinematographer, and editor. GIVE LIGHT, her first feature length documentary, criss-crosses the globe to bring the voices of indigenous midwives into the maternity care dialog, and aims to energize the conversations around women's health care and indigenous rights. The film recently had its World Premiere at the Doquementa International Film Festival in Mexico, and is slated for a PBS broadcast in 2023. Her work has screened internationally in Spain, France, Mexico, Netherlands, Sweden, London, South Africa, Nigeria, Mozambique, Portugal, Philippines, and Greece. The Art Council of New Orleans commissioned her to produce a short film for their community arts awards on the oldest second-line organization, the Young Men Olympian. From 2022 through 2015, her film work has been exhibited: at the Female Filmmakers Festival, Birth Justice Film Fest, Women’s Center for Healing: Women's in the Worlds Cultures, and at the NOLA Feminist Short Film Festival at Loyola University, and more in the USA. Steph also teaches Kundalini Yoga, and has brought yoga to youth in a local detention center.
