Anna Margarita Albelo is a Cuban-American writer/director/producer with 20+ years experience specialized in making films with an emphasis on women and diverse people in front and behind the camera. Anna produced Palestinian-American, Suha Araj’s 2021 Oscar qualifying short, “Rosa” and earned a John Cassavetes’ Spirit Award nomination for Madeleine Olnek’s “Wild Nights with Emily” starring Molly Shannon. “The Never List”, produced by her company Burning Bra Productions, was awarded the 2021 ReFrame Stamp for gender-balanced hiring and passed the Bechdel, Ava Duvernay, Ko, and Vito Russo tests for representation. Her body of work blends narrative, documentary, and comedic elements into a unique story-telling style that has become her trademark. LA Weekly calls her work, “Riveting” and IndieWire spotlighted her as a “Filmmaker to watch!” FILM: Anna is set to direct a neo-feminist dark comedy feature, “Clare at 16” written by Guinevere Turner (American Psycho), produced by Cassian Elwes (The Butler) and starring Madelaine Petsch (Riverdale). She is also developing with Issa Rae’s Color Creative and Wise Entertainment her coming of age film set in the Cuban community of 1984 Miami, “The Papaya Factory.” Her 2014 multi-award winning feature, "Who's Afraid of Vagina Wolf?" was released theatrically in France and her 2008 short film, “The Turkey” screened at the Cannes Film Festival where Anna served as a juror for the “Queer Palm Award” in 2014 and their ambassador in 2019. TV: Anna spent the first 15 years of her career in France working as a filmmaker and regular collaborator to French network Canal Plus writing and directing broadcast documentaries and shorts. In the US, she worked for FOX21 as a TV development writer for show runner Dmitry Lipkin (HBO, FX) from 2014-2017.
