Jenny Slate made her feature ﬁlm debut in Gillian Robespierre’s critically acclaimed Obvious Child. Slate starred as “Donna,” a twenty-something comedienne whose unplanned pregnancy forces her to confront the realities of independent womanhood for the ﬁrst time. The ﬁlm premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and was released by A24 Films.
For her breakout performance in Obvious Child, Slate won a Critics’ Choice Award for “Best Actress in a Comedy” and was honored with a 2015 Virtuoso Award at the Santa Barbara Film Festival. She was also nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for “Best Female Lead Actor” and a Gotham Award for “Breakthrough Actor.” Additionally, The New York Times Magazine, Time Variety, and W Magazine acknowledged Slate as one of the year’s best performances. Slate re-teamed with the ﬁlmmakers behind Obvious Child, Gillian Robespierre and Elisabeth Holm, for Landline. The ﬁlm is an honest comedy about what happens when sisters become friends and parents become humans starring Slate, Edie Falco, John Turturro, Jay Duplass and Abby Quinn. Landline premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival was released by Amazon in July 2017.
Slate recently appeared in Ruben Fleischer’s Venom opposite Michelle Williams, Tom Hardy and Riz Ahmed, and in Drew Pearce’s Hotel Artemis with Jodie Foster, Sterling K. Brown, Charlie Day and Jeff Goldblum. The ﬁlm follows a nurse (Foster) who runs an underground hospital for Los Angeles’ most sinister criminals and ﬁnds that one of her patients is actually there to assassinate another.
Slate voiced the character of “Bellwether” in Disney’s Academy Award winning ﬁlm Zootopia which made over $1 billion worldwide. The ﬁlm was named the #4 biggest animated ﬁlm, named one of AFI’s Top 10 Films of 2016, was nominated for a BAFTA Award, won 6 Annie Awards, and won the Critics’ Choice Award and Golden Globe Award for “Best Animated Feature.” She also lent her voice to The Secret LIfe of Pets 2 as “Gidget” which has made over $875 million worldwide, and she will reprise her role in the sequel, The Secret LIfe of Pets 2 . Additionally, Slate voiced “Harley Quinn” in The Lego Batman Movie with Will Arnett, and voiced “Valerie Da Vinci” in Despicable Me 3 with Steve Carell.
Slate is the voice, co-writer and co-creator of Marcel The Shell with Shoes On, viewed over 26 million times in YouTube, and she is the co-author of the New York Times best selling children’s books Marcel the Shell with Shoes On: Things About Me and Marcel the Shell with Shoes On: The Most Surprised I’ve Ever Been.
