A quote that summarizes everything I am about as a filmmaker is “They tried to bury us, they didn’t know we were seeds”. Black women storytelling, specifically from the POV of a 1st generation medium toned Jamaican American who wears her natural tightly coiled hair has often times been whitewashed, palpable, and politically westernized. My existence is revolutionary and so everything that I create centers women that look like me, we are not sidelined in our own stories through Jan 22 Productions. I wanted to tell the real imagination story of what poverty can do to a person using humor.
