I chose to tell this story because my family’s migration story reflects an experience shared by many multicultural families separated by borders and time. When I realized I could actively shape my relationship with my fathers side of the family, returning home became both a personal journey and a coming-of-age. Pre-existing relationships with the participants allow for the story to unfold with intimacy: exploring the depths of discomfort and taking a relationship beyond a visit. I’m motivated by a desire for my family’s history to create a point of entry for others navigating identity, belonging, and inherited memory.
