The Many Roles of the Producer

Live online course

In this live, online eight-week course, you will learn about the creative and business aspects of independent film producing and develop successful producing strategies for all major aspects of getting your independent fiction film made and seen.


During the course term, you will learn the ins and outs of producing a film from development to distribution, including scheduling and budgeting, hiring a casting director and making offers to talent, and supervising the post-production and delivery process with an experienced independent producer as your guide. Producers at any level of experience are welcome to apply.


What you bring to the course:

  • A basic understanding of the film production process in practical and creative terms
  • A desire to learn about producing and how to take a project from script to screen
  • Producers of all experience levels are welcome - it is not required to have a project in development to participate

What you’ll get from the course:

  • A detailed explanation of what the producer does from development and pre-production to post-production and delivery
  • An overview of how to budget at different levels
  • An understanding of legal terms and concerns such as structuring agreements, standard deal terms, contracts, and more
  • An approach to putting materials together for talent and investors
  • An explanation of different types of financing structures
  • Approaches to sales, distribution, and film festival strategies


For an additional fee of $150, you may elect to meet with your Instructor for a 45-minute 1-1 session at the end of the course term. In this 1-1 session, your Instructor would provide feedback on a selected assignment.


A limited number of need-based scholarships are available and are considered on a rolling basis as they are received. Those who apply earlier will have a greater chance of getting support.
