The Human Chair is a haunting psychological horror based on the short story by Edogawa Ranpo. It has captivated me ever since reading Junji Ito’s manga adaptation. It’s a phenomenal exploration of paranoia and surrealism. I wanted to try my hand in writing and directing a horror short, while also attempting an adaptation for the first time. As this is in the public domain, utilises one main location and has minimal characters, it felt like a great opportunity to exercise my creative problem solving, while creating a genuine horror experience, focusing on evoking emotional reactions rather than aiming for grandeur.
