I chose to tell "The Emancipation Dilemma" because it reflects a contradiction I have witnessed across generations, of post-independence Mozambique women: the promise of liberation alongside enduring social expectations, particularly around gender and belonging.
As a dual Canadian-Mozambican artist, I inhabit this tension myself. The film centers women whose lives reveal emancipation not as a fixed achievement, but as an ongoing negotiation shaped by history, culture, and personal desire.
It creates a space where complexity replaces cliché Africa, and asks a question that continues to shape our subconscious journey: what does freedom truly mean when inherited dreams meet inherited constraints?
