Every year, the Sundance Institute Vanguard Award is bestowed upon an artist or industry figure who defines the innovation, originality, and independent spirit upon which the Institute was founded in 1981. This year, the Vanguard Award presented by Acura was given to Siân Heder, director of CODA, for her work in fiction filmmaking and Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, director of SUMMER OF SOUL (...OR, WHEN THE REVOLUTION COULD NOT BE TELEVISED) for his work in nonfiction filmmaking. They join previous honorees including Radha Blank, Lulu Wang, Ryan Coogler, Marielle Heller, Benh Zeitlin, and Boots Riley.
