I chose to tell this story to trace the moment a child is forced to shrink. Growing up, I learned to stay small. I wanted to project that experience onto a girl whose innocence isn't lost gradually, but fractured in an instant.
Seneca is about the violent end of the innocent space that children are supposed to inhabit. When she discovers her father’s truth in the midst of life and death, she is forced to see the world as it is, rather than how it should be. This explores how fast that shift happens and how lasting the scars are.
