“人山人海” (“people mountain, people sea”) is a Chinese idiom describing vast crowds and the feeling of being lost. My parents’ immigration from China to the United States, and my own life between the United States and the United Arab Emirates, allowed me to cross cultures and languages while navigating constant change and instability—belonging everywhere and nowhere all at once. In a world of over 8.2 billion people, it’s easy to feel unseen. This mixed-media visual poem reinterprets “人山人海” not as isolation, but as a reminder that no one is truly alone and every story matters.
