Nayika is an experimental short film inspired by two archetypes from the ancient Indian performance treatise, the Natya Shastra: Vasakasajja, the woman adorning herself to meet her beloved, and Khandita, the woman who confronts betrayal. The film’s narrative is deliberately simple, allowing meaning to emerge entirely through classical Kathak dance, where gesture, rhythm, and movement replace dialogue. Sanskrit narration weaves through the film, not as exposition but as atmosphere, evoking the ritual and sacred origins of the form. Nayika reimagines these timeless emotional states through the body, offering an intimate encounter with love, anticipation, and rupture, and profound human vulnerability.
