About this submission
A Palestinian-American boy gets in trouble with his parents after he scars his right hand.
"My Right Hand" is a film about a time where I was deeply questioning my religious identity. To be Muslim is not only to have a set of values and beliefs, but to follow a set of daily behaviors and habits as well. Behaviors that, as an American-born kid trying to fit in, can isolate you from those around you. As a result, I tended to push away that side of myself as a method of social survival.
However, as I grew become more conscious of the struggles within our community with age, I became more emboldened in my Muslim identity. To be Muslim is to be burdened with the state of our community on a daily basis - war, occupation, mistreatment, dehumanization.
With this film, I wanted to craft a story about the struggle of being a part of these two worlds at once. The struggle of, in this case, being Palestinian, with the struggle of trying to live a normal American life. To live within the dichotomy of being Muslim in a world that views us as others. Where everything we consume, from our news to our pop culture, carries with it seeds of historical bigotry. My Right Hand is a film about the experience of being an innocent kid in a complex world.
