Merrell Brand-Supported Storytelling Program

In collaboration with Sundance Collab, Merrell is launching a global storytelling program built to bring its brand platform, It Starts Outside, to life through emotionally grounded, culturally resonant films.

This program explores the simple power of being outside through stories about people, perspective, and transformation. Moving beyond traditional advertising, the focus is on social-first storytelling rooted in real moments, real communities, and human truth.

Through a series of original social-first short films, selected filmmakers will explore how stepping outside can spark connection, renewal, and personal change.

The Challenge

We are seeking five filmmakers from around the world to each create their own original, 60-90 second film designed specifically for vertical social platforms. Your mission is to explore Merrell’s core belief, It Starts Outside, for a world that is increasingly lived indoors. From our homes to our screens, we are more disconnected than ever. The outside is the antidote. It is where we find reset and reconnection to culture, community, perspective, and even ourselves. It is Merrell’s purpose as a brand to share the simple power of the outside with everyone. We are seeking filmmakers who share that belief and mission and want to inspire the world to do the same.

Selected filmmakers will enter an intensive online program over three days in September designed to learn about collaborating with a brand. The filmmakers will then receive $20K to make and deliver their greenlit concepts, cutdowns (:06, :15, :30), and stills between October and December, with designated program check-ins.

The Creative Brief: It Starts Outside

Submission Requirement: How would you approach this brief? (Up to 500 words)

Objective: Create a concept or “take” for a 60-90 second, vertical film that captures a complete, emotionally resonant story rooted in the "simple power of being outside". We are not looking for a "commercial;" it is a human story where the outside acts as a catalyst for change.

Foundation: Merrell believes transformation begins the moment we step outside. The outside is not defined by terrain, performance, or distance. It is defined by what it unlocks in people.

Your story should reflect:

  • Transformation: A moment of reset, reconnection, or personal shift.
  • Connection: A sense of belonging, community, or renewed relationship.
  • Human truth: An observed, emotionally grounded moment that feels real.

Built from Merrell’s 2026 repositioning and “It Starts Outside” brand platform, the core creative territory is not 'outdoor adventure' in the traditional sense. The strongest stories will show what changed in a person because they went outside, whether it's emotionally, physically, mentally, creatively, spiritually, psychologically, or other. This does not necessarily equate to a final achievement.

To learn more about the brief and how to apply, join our upcoming Insider Session with Merrell’s Creative Director, Alex Ho and Sundance Collab Director, Patty West on August 11.

Critical Guidelines

  • Design for vertical storytelling with a strong "hook" in the first 5 seconds to drive immediate engagement.
  • Prioritize human, observational storytelling over polished, manicured commercial aesthetics.
  • Feature real people and authentic moments wherever possible.
  • Show the outside as context, not the hero.
  • Focus on emotion and transformation over activity or performance.
  • Prioritize every day, intimate moments over epic outcomes.
  • Avoid overt brand narration or messaging.
  • No competitor products should be depicted. Product will be provided but should not be the focus.
  • No AI-generated content is permitted in consumer-facing materials.

What are we looking for?

  • Originality: A fresh interpretation of the brief that avoids generic "outdoor" clichés.
  • Emotional Arc: The ability to convey a complete narrative journey in just 60-90 seconds and considered cut-downs of :06, :15, and :30.
  • Distinct POV: Coherence between your artistic perspective and the story you want to tell.
  • Cultural Relevance: Stories rooted in real communities and lived experiences.

Merrell Brand Values

  • Infectiously Optimistic: Hopeful without being naïve. Celebrate effort, renewal, momentum, and possibility.
  • Blissfully Uncontained: Spontaneous, free-moving, open to detours and discovery.
  • Wildly Curious: Driven by fascination with people, rituals, landscapes, subcultures, and overlooked perspectives.
  • Deeply Attuned: Emotionally observant and perceptive. Stories should feel lived-in and emotionally true.

Priya Ahluwalia

Juror

Ahluwalia is informed by the designer’s dual heritage and London roots and explores the potential of vintage and surplus materials by giving them new life.

Ahluwalia embarked on the MA Menswear Design course at The University of Westminster, and it was here that she developed her design ethos and point of view that would inform her work moving forward. During the course, Ahluwalia went on a family trip to Lagos, where she noticed hawkers wearing obscure vintage European clothing and wanted to learn more about how the clothing ended up there. It was then that she learnt about the global second-hand clothing trade. Following the thread of research, she learnt about Panipat in India, which is the global capital of recycling clothing in the world. Shortly after, Ahluwalia visited Panipat and saw first-hand the sheer amount of clothing that ended up there. The research and photographs Ahluwalia took culminated in a book, “Sweet Lassi”, and informed the direction of her final collection and ultimately, the brand.

Ahluwalia has achieved many industry accolades, she won the H&M Design award in 2018, was a joint winner of the coveted 2020 LVMH Prize, was awarded the 2021 Queen Elizabeth II award for British Design, won the 2021 GQ Menswear Fund, was in the final of the 2022 International Woolmark Prize and was awarded the 'Leader of Change' award at the 2022 Fashion Awards, a third consecutive win for her continued work in creating positive change in the fashion industry. In September 2023, Ahluwalia won the CNMI Sustainability x Bicester Collection Award for emerging designers and in 2024, Ahluwalia won the New Establishment Menswear Award at the Fashion Awards. Creative & Film Director Priya Ahluwalia was featured on British Vogue’s January 2024 cover, in recognition of her design and eco-social contributions.

Since the inception of the brand, Ahluwalia has enjoyed working with others and has collaborated with Mulberry, GANNI, Paul Smith, Microsoft, Ace & Tate, Pandora and Puma. She has also worked on brand partnerships with Porsche, NTS, Adidas, Cartier and Levi's, among others.

Ahluwalia made their MET Gala debut in 2025 with custom looks for BAFTA-winning actor Aimee Lou Wood and Olympic champion athlete Gabrielle Thomas. Priya’s designs cater to the theme Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, are inspired by the beauty of Black Dandyism and elegance to celebrate strength, heritage and cultural pride.

Ahluwalia’s work and creative vision extends past clothing; in 2020, she released her second book, Jalebi, which celebrates the beauty of multicultural Britain in London’s Southall. In November 2020, Ahluwalia was invited to join Gucci Fest and create her first film, Joy, a kaleidoscopic look at the Black British experience. Ahluwalia went on to creatively direct and direct a further six notable films, and as a result, she was signed as a film director with Ridley Scott’s Blackdog film agency.

As well as Ahluwalia campaigns, Priya has since directed branded films including spots for Puma, AKT, Nike and Levi's, and various music videos. In September 2025, Ahluwalia’s TVC directorial debut was released, a 60-second commercial for the coveted This Girl Can initiative.

In all her work, Ahluwalia endeavours to create, innovate and design whilst driving social and environmental change.
