Master Classes are in-depth, interactive learning experiences focused on craft and career building and led by renowned industry experts. Topics include fiction and documentary filmmaking, TV writing and production, and navigating and succeeding in the entertainment industry.

Documentary filmmaking is, at its heart, a profound act of trust. We ask participants to open their lives, share their vulnerabilities, and relive their darkest moments in front of the camera. The documentary filmmaker must balance the desire for a compelling story with the steadfast commitment to ethical care for their participants, audiences, crew, and themselves.

In this Master Class, award-winning director/producer Anayansi Prado shares insights from her experience creating her latest film, Uvalde Mom (2025, SXSW). She will delve into the care practices she developed and learned throughout the filmmaking process and release of her film.

This Master Class is structured into three parts:

  • Participant Care: Focusing on the well-being of those featured in your film, particularly participants in vulnerable situations.
  • Crew Care: Emphasizing the importance of a supportive environment for the filmmaking team, including self-care for directors.
  • Audience/Screening Care: Creating a respectful and safe experience for viewers and film participants alike.

What You’ll Learn:

  • How to cultivate a safe, respectful, and nurturing environment during the filmmaking process.
  • How to emphasize ethical storytelling and foster genuine connections with your film participants and crew.
  • How to bring these principles to the release of your film at screenings.

Join Prado to master the art of telling sensitive stories devoid of exploitation or extraction. This Master Class is an essential touchstone for anyone dedicated to a filmmaking practice rooted in mindfulness and deep-seated care.
