Creator
Shiao-ya Maggie Huang is a Taiwanese-born, Latin American-raised film director currently based in Singapore and Taiwan. Her storytelling integrates filmmaking, screenwriting, stop-motion animation, and creative technologies to craft unique narratives. A graduate of the School of Art, Design & Media at NTU Singapore, she is also a directing alumna of the BIFF x CHANEL Asian Film Academy. During her time at the academy, she directed Last Day of Us (2024), a short film that delves into themes of coming of age, queer identity, memory, and the Korean diaspora was premiered at the 29th Busan International Film Festival. Her documentary Farewell Chang Chun (2022), which delves into themes of urbanization, family, and memory through the lens of local Taiwanese imagery, won the Taiwan Pitch Nonfiction Short Film Fund in 2022 and was a finalist for the inaugural Sony Future Filmmakers Awards in 2023. The film is currently distributed online by TaiwanPlus. Building on the project, she developed Memories of Ming (2023), which was showcased in Linz, Austria, as part of the Ars Electronica Campus Exhibition 2023. Maggie also works in animation, with her stop-motion short film Drive with Me (2021) having been selected and screened at the Mental Health Film Festival Singapore 2021 and the National Youth Film Awards 2021.
