Self expression is chaotic, as we are often at war with ourselves. Being a woman of color often prevents you from fitting in to typical beauty standards, and this film is specifically about struggling with textured hair. Having big hair means being literally unable to fit into a typical standard. It feels unfair and that bitterness often turns inward. The poem read is “La Chevalure” by Charles Baudelaire, a French poem about beautiful hair. I used mixed media to tell this story because it was the best tool to capture the emotion and eclectic nature of being a girl.
