How could I ever hope to understand my Egyptian heritage if my one connection (my grandmother) was conditioned to prioritize western culture over Egyptian culture? I made Key of Life to answer this question and to interrogate my own connection to Egypt. Inspired by the works of Maya Deren, I felt called to explore my anger towards imperialism, the cultural hatred bred by British colonialists in Egypt, and the shame of not understanding my culture through a dream-like walk through the woods.
Dylan Jagla is currently a senior at Emory University double majoring in Film and Creative Writing. As a screenwriter and filmmaker, Dylan is passionate about championing underrepresented voices.
