About this Weekend Intensive
In a rapidly changing distribution landscape, independent documentary filmmakers are increasingly navigating paths outside of traditional sales agents and distributors. This weekend-long intensive offers a practical overview of contemporary independent documentary distribution and examines how filmmakers are getting their work to audiences, generating revenue, and sustaining long-term careers through non-traditional and hybrid approaches. At a moment when fewer films are being distributed through conventional avenues, this course provides tools to help filmmakers think strategically about release models that align with their creative goals, impact ambitions, and financial realities.
Over the course of this live, online, weekend intensive, you will explore a range of distribution pathways through recent documentary case studies, interactive discussion, and real-world examples. The intensive will examine what is working in today’s market, including theatrical and event-based releases, educational and community distribution, digital platforms, and impact campaigns. Participants will gain clarity around how to design a distribution strategy that builds audiences, creates measurable impact, supports revenue generation, and contributes to long-term career sustainability, while also connecting with fellow filmmakers navigating similar challenges.
By the end of the weekend, you will:
- Understand the current independent documentary distribution landscape
- Identify non-traditional and hybrid distribution pathways available to filmmakers
- Learn how filmmakers are reaching audiences outside of traditional distribution deals
- Explore strategies for generating revenue and supporting career sustainability
- Examine how distribution choices can drive impact and audience engagement
- Analyze recent documentary case studies to understand what works in today’s market
This intensive will:
- Break down real-world distribution approaches using recent documentaries as case studies
- Offer practical frameworks that align distribution, impact goals, and revenue
- Address both creative and logistical considerations of releasing a documentary
- Provide opportunities for open discussion and questions with the instructor
- Create space for peer learning and shared experiences among filmmakers
This intensive is ideal for:
- Documentary filmmakers preparing to release an independent film
- Filmmakers exploring alternatives to traditional distribution models
- Directors and producers seeking to better understand today’s documentary marketplace
- Filmmakers interested in building sustainable, impact-driven careers
