I made Hum Aangi as a Pakistani filmmaker grappling with my own disconnected roots from the Sheedi community and, in many ways, from my broader African heritage. This film became a way to bridge that distance. Through Isra’s journey, I explore self-love not as something found in the mirror, but in the collective, through music, ritual, and the power of community. Too often, the Sheedi are portrayed only through hardship: flooding, poverty, or violence. I wanted to shift that lens and honor their joy, resilience, and cultural pride, showing how tradition and togetherness can become a radical act of belonging.
