As a queer, black Southerner, I rarely saw myself or people like me on screen. Growing up in South Carolina and having received a theatre degree in the state, I quickly learned that work that features my experience was rare to behold on screen. I wanted to see myself, my family, on screen.

Jay Najeeah (she/they) is a freelance filmmaker, writer, dramaturg, and artist-activist hailing from Columbia, SC. Based in DC, their work is grounded in both Theatre of the Oppressed pedagogy and the principles of Black Feminism. A graduate of Howard University’s MFA Film Program, Jay is committed to storytelling and uplifting the perspective of queer, southern, Black folk.
