Jacob Zalman is a middle-aged Jewish man, who discovers that his teenage son, who has been raised without Judaism in his life, has written an essay questioning the events of the Holocaust. In response, Jacob decides to take his son Arthur to visit his father Herschel, a Holocaust survivor with dementia, whose mind and memory are gone while his body is physically sustained by machines like oxygen tanks and IV tubes.
