I made ‘God Is Not Dead’ to explore a young person’s search for meaning in a hypermediated world. My protagonist, Anthony, moves through constant offers of ‘meaning’ where every institution (family, film, music, religion) falls short of a genuine path. I chose to tell this story through a surrealistic media-based formal lens to ground the viewer in the character’s mind. Anthony’s struggle reflects the Gen-Z experience of searching for meaning in a world of over-saturation and spiritual emptiness, resulting in a violent, but necessary, rebirth.
